The work from home revolution

work from home revolution

Respected business journalist Leon Gettler recently wrote a piece on changes in the work placed, specially asking if the ‘office‘ as we know it has a future. As our rentoid community knows we operate in a decentralised way as all employees work form where every they please. Leon also mentioned our humble rental website in his story in the Age as an example.

You can read it by clicking on the link below:

Does the office have a future?

And just in case you’re thinking of working from home, we’ve got plenty of laptops and office equipment for hire!

Cheers, rentoid team.

Collaborative Consumption

leave a comment

The cool thing about rentoid and the sharing culture that has emerged on the web recently is this:

We are all part of something much bigger than us.

Author and thinker Rachel Botsman has written a book ‘What’s mine is yours’, which features rentoid.com as one of the leaders of the movement. Which mean ‘you’ are a leader, because the site is what it is because of the people on it, not the people who built it. I’ll share more about Rachel and Collaborative Consumption in the coming weeks during the book launch, but here is a video of here speaking at TEDx in Sydney earlier this year to whet your appetite. It’s a very thought provoking talk about how cool the future can be. Enjoy.

Exploding Rental Myths #1- “You only rent when you can’t afford to buy it”

leave a comment

Part of the fun here at rentoidHQ is smashing lots of common myths and misconceptions about hire and rental.  So we thought we’d do a short series of blog posts on some of the key myths that rentoid has helped squash.

Starting with the myth that you only rent stuff you can’t afford.

The economic logic just doesn’t add up on this one.

Let me give you an example.  Do you own a camcorder?  It probably cost you about $500, and you may have saved for it, put it on the plastic, whatever, but you were able to afford it.

So then, how many times have you used it?  A recent twitpoll on twitter suggests most people have used theirs an average of four times.  Thats $125.00 a time!

Would you have purchased it if the sales guy said to you “Each time you use this HD-XP-3300 SL-CD Cam Corder it will cost you $125.00″?

Didn’t think so.

To rub salt into your wound, that camera at the back of your cupboard is probably out of date now too.

But you can rent new HD Cam Corders for about $120.00 a day.   That’s cheaper than buying a new one, and it features the lastest technology.

Rent it four times, and that’s $480.00, cheaper than spending $500+ on a new one.

And it doesn’t matter if its a lawnmower, ladder, Playstation, or car roof carrier, the economics of buying some of these items that you can afford, but rarely use always looses out to renting!

Myth Busted!

And if you have an example to share about how you have used rentoid to rent something that you could afford, but only needed on a temporary basis, we’d love to hear about it!

Great Corporate Cultures

In a recent Smart Company article rentoid.com was featured alongside Zappos, Virgin Blue and Atlassian. Which is quite a nice compliment.

Hire snow skiis & snowboards

leave a comment

The cheapest snow rentals are right here on rentoid.com If you need an example here it is right here.

A snowboard for rent for $25 a week or $50 a month. This is only 10% of what you’d pay on the mountain or at Snow equipment stores.

If you have snow skiis or a snowboard, you really should be renting it out on rentoid. Be smart and make some money out of your equipment while you’re not using it. I can’t think of a better way to get your lift tickets for free - rent your snow equipment on the days you can’t go.

Mush. mush, Snow plow, Snow plow!

Apple ipad for rent

one comment

As promised we’ll have an Apple ipad for rent on rentoid.com in Melbourne early next week.

apple-ipad1

It is $20 a day to rent. You can rent it for maximum of 3 days. People are starting to book their days of ipad play. It’s a great way to test the device and reduce the risk of buying it if it doesn’t rock your world the way it is supposed to.

Click here for more details on the rental of it.

How to get a free Apple ipad

Rent it out. Why would you want to do this? Simple, you’ll get your shiny new ipad for free.

Here’s how: Rent out your ipad for the first 5 weeks you own it. Rental fee of up to $100 per week. 5 rentals later, and other people have paid for your ipad.

apple-ipad

You might ask - who would rent an ipad for $100? People who are curious about it and want to test the functionality before they buy it. people who are prepared to wait a few weeks or months before they dive in. In fact: real people like these below who tweeted directly to me that they would rent one as soon as we have it available.

So here’s what I will be doing. Buying one as soon as they are available in Australia and renting it out. We all win.

Get smart, and get yours listed on rentoid.com today - and be sure to tell us when you list it so we can promote it for you.

Steve.

Virtual office - ABC 7.30 report

This week rentoid and our CEE Steve Sammartino featured on the ABC 7.30 report. The key area for discussion was the fact that rentoid (proudly we might add) employs staff from around the world in developing markets. before you watch the segment here’s some information worth knowing about employing people in developing markets:

- Our employees earn significantly more than they would doing the same work in their home country

- Our business would not exist without them. It has enabled an entrepreneur to build rentoid.com which is creating value and generating money in the local economy.

- We are proud to help people in developing markets via being part of building infrastructure. We know this is far more productive way to improve living standards globally than providing charity.

The story below stars our CTO (Chief Technology Officer) Vasilii Racovitsa.
