Rental Wish List

leave a comment

Ten things I wish were listed on rentoid in my local area:

1 -5 More people. I would love have the option to hire the services of the people in my local community for whatever need I may have at the time.

A few examples off the top of my head:

1. Cooking

2. Cleaning

3. Entertainment

4. Driving me around if I don’t have access to a car

5. Teaching me a new skill

6. More accommodation. The more people list spare rooms, the more competition, the lower prices will go (in theory). Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could go on a holiday and not have to stay in a hotel? Or even if instead of living in one place as we normally do you could stay somewhere new each night. This kind of lifestyle obviously wouldn’t suit everyone but for me personally I think it would awesome! It would make life much more interesting. Think about all the amazing people you meet and friends you make when you go traveling. What if you could live like that all the time?!

7. Bicycles, mine sucks! I would much rather rent a decent one for a reasonable price when I need it than endure what I’ve got (ok that sounds a bit dramatic, but still!).

8. A shaver! I like to keep my hair short. It needs to get cut about once every 2 months. For something I need to use that rarely I shouldn’t have to own one myself, so wasteful! - Ok so this might not be the type of thing many people would share… oh well…

9. Gym equipment. Gym membership is expensive and why should I pay that much when I’m sure there are people that live nearby with equipment that’s perfectly good, that they probably hardly ever use and that is just sitting there!

10. Media. Think about what is actually around you in the houses of your neighbours. I bet there are soooo many great books I have never read and heaps of movies I have never seen. Let’s get renting!

Cheers, Geordie

Our vision here at rentoid is to change the world, to create a smarter way of consuming and to change the world for the better. It’s a big goal but our philosophy is that you should ‘always aim for the moon, because even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars’.

We can’t do this alone and we need your help! If rentoid is really going to shake things up we need to spread our message overseas.

the globe

Rentoid was founded and is based in Australia but we are aware that we have members from many other countries too. This post is a shout out to you! We want to know, how did you hear about Rentoid? What do you like/dislike about our site and service? How could we improve? Do you have any suggestions on how we could create larger and more numerous rentoid communities?

Let’s create a better future together

Your hidden assets

leave a comment

A few bits and pieces I have lying around the house…

Books - don’t read them every day (and hard to read more than one at a time.)

DVDs - I’ve already watched the.

Clothes & shoes - can’t wear them all at once.

Backpacks - I have 2. I might use one in a day, but almost never need to use both at once.

Musical instruments and gear - that guitar has been sitting in the corner for quite a while now. But I’m still very attached to it and don’t want to sell it.

Bubble machine - bought it for a party but I don’t have parties very often.

Hard drive space - I while back my external hard drive was having some problems and needed to be reformatted. The problem was I didn’t have anywhere to put all my files so I had to go out and buy another one just so I could copy over the files and fix it. Crazy right?! I hope I can help someone else avoid this conundrum by listing my own hard drive space on rentoid.

Dumbells - These are something that many people have, but think about it, if you’re like me, most people don’t use them every day and the days I do use them it will only be for 15 minutes or so.

Suit - what do I need this for? Weddings and funerals. Do these come around often? Nope.

TVs - Sure, it might turn out that nobody wants to rent your old TV but you never know, and it certainly doesn’t hurt trying.

I’ll be listing these on rentoid in the next few days. What items do you have lying around the house that could be out there making you easy money?

Rentoid Secrets

leave a comment

Rentoid Secrets:
- Things worth less than $100 to buy never rent out. Don’t waste your time listing them.
- Items without pictures never rent out. make sure you item has a picture or it will never be rented.
- Pricing matters. When the price is right you rent things over and over again. when it is wrong it will never rent.

Here is the rentoid pricing guide:
Daily rental price = 1% of items value to buy
Weekly rental price = 5% of items value to buy
Monthly rental price = 10% of items value to buy

If you aren’t sure what it is worth to buy use the website www.getprice.com.au or Google it or even check on Ebay.

Put a bond down on your item to protect it. I recommend 20-50% of it’s value. Because people are normally renting things not because they can’t afford it, but because they only need it temporarily.

Here is a list of items which have been hot rentals lately:

1. Roof pods (Thule)
2. Roof racks for cars - especially during the holiday period
3. Wireless internet modem key’s
4. Light projectors for presentations
5. Gaming consoles (Wii Xbox et al) and all accessories
6. Jetski’s
7. Boats (Skiining and fishing)
8. Trailers - any type - hot item.
9. Quirky Costumes - guy has a chewbacca suit which rents out on rentoid every weekend.
10. Laptops - any kind so long as it has wifi
11. Video cameras
12. Digital cameras
14. iphones
15. Apple Mac laptos
16. Pressure washers.

Also - just check you shed, spare room and garage.

Make sure you put in very detailed descriptions. The more words, the more rentals. People want info.

If you need any more info just call me Steve on 0438 779566 (I’m real and I’m here to help)

New 1 click rental system

leave a comment

We’ve just changed the rentoid payment system which will improve the site dramatically for everyone.

How it was

The new system reduces barriers for people who want to rent your items. Previously we took a 5% service fee on all rentals. Which was cumbersome, and required potential renters of your items to pay a fee up front, before they could even talk to you about renting it. It was a big ask and many of your potential rentoid customers just clicked away…. although we had our ‘rentoid guarantee’ it was just all too hard.

What we’ve done

People can now rent your item with one click. Once they are logged in as members, all they need to do to rent your item is click this button below. And you contact details will be given on the screen, with more detailed information emailed to them. Then you can both get renting straight away.

picture-611picture-63

We are no longer taking a 5% commision on rentals. Our research shows that this will make people more than 10 times more likely to rent your item. So if you have’nt had a great deal of rentals via rentoid yet, then get ready for things to improve.

What this means

It is no longer free to list your items for rent. We now require a one time payment of $4.00 to list an item. It’s lose change… the price of a latte, and we think it’s pretty fair.

Australian $2 coins

If you intend to list lots of items we’d recommend you join for 1 year at the price of $30 - this gives you as unlimited listings as a fully paid ‘rentreprenuer’.

It does mean you need to pay up front for listings, but it is simpler for people wanting to rent your stuff and help you make money, and ultimately cheaper than paying a 5% commission which can is mostly more than the $4 listing fee, and was payable for every rental previously.

We think it’s much better for everyone involved… what do you think?

Important Change

leave a comment

At rentoid we are about to change our payment system. We are removing the 5% rental fee we take on all rentals and replacing it with a pay to list your items system

The good news:

  • All your current listings remain - free
  • Our research shows people are more than 10 times more likely to rent an item when they can speak to you on the phone first
  • More rentals occur when people don’t have to pay anything up front
  • The rental process will be much easier for your rental customers
  • You can still list as many items as you want for free until this goes live in about 2 weeks.

The not as good news

  • You have to pay $4 to list an item, or $30 for as many listings as you want for a year.

The reality is, you’ll make heaps more money with this rentoid system, and $4 is a small investment to turn it into $50 or even $500 depending on what you are renting out…. It’s a good deal.

If you have any questions or want to chat in more detail feel free to call me directly on + 61 438 779566 -

Rentoid improved usability & awesomeness

leave a comment

We’ve just updated our site on rentoid which is super awesome.

But there is only 1 new feature. Yep, just one. Which is a rating system. So after each rental you’ll be able to document your experience with your other rentoid member. Both the renter and the rentee get to rate each other and make some comments. It’s so simple to use I don’t need to explain it here.

Rating System

There is nothing else which is new. Instead we’ve just made everything we already had easier to use.

Check it out and let us know your thoughts.

Cool rentoid t-shirts from Neighborhoodies

leave a comment

This is the fact - Neighborhoodies have the coolest t-shirts on the internet - forget threadless fan boy crap.

At neighborhoodies you create your own t-shirt. You simply mash-up different fonts, images and shirt designs - you’re limited only to your imagination. For rentoid I’ve created a couple of different t-shirts which are not only cool but spread the good word on our community based non-evil business. Here’s my latest piece of art below:

As this shirt shows - “the future is retro” and rentoid is the future.

So if you want one let us know and will cover some of the cost and get you one for $30 AUD.

Awesome value for a t-shirt which is evangelizing a business which could potentially save the world from over consumption. In the process you will be the coolest dude in your suburb and cosmos. So get on it and place your order now. Woot Woot.
