Rental Wish List

leave a comment

Ten things I wish were listed on rentoid in my local area:

1 -5 More people. I would love have the option to hire the services of the people in my local community for whatever need I may have at the time.

A few examples off the top of my head:

1. Cooking

2. Cleaning

3. Entertainment

4. Driving me around if I don’t have access to a car

5. Teaching me a new skill

6. More accommodation. The more people list spare rooms, the more competition, the lower prices will go (in theory). Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could go on a holiday and not have to stay in a hotel? Or even if instead of living in one place as we normally do you could stay somewhere new each night. This kind of lifestyle obviously wouldn’t suit everyone but for me personally I think it would awesome! It would make life much more interesting. Think about all the amazing people you meet and friends you make when you go traveling. What if you could live like that all the time?!

7. Bicycles, mine sucks! I would much rather rent a decent one for a reasonable price when I need it than endure what I’ve got (ok that sounds a bit dramatic, but still!).

8. A shaver! I like to keep my hair short. It needs to get cut about once every 2 months. For something I need to use that rarely I shouldn’t have to own one myself, so wasteful! - Ok so this might not be the type of thing many people would share… oh well…

9. Gym equipment. Gym membership is expensive and why should I pay that much when I’m sure there are people that live nearby with equipment that’s perfectly good, that they probably hardly ever use and that is just sitting there!

10. Media. Think about what is actually around you in the houses of your neighbours. I bet there are soooo many great books I have never read and heaps of movies I have never seen. Let’s get renting!

Cheers, Geordie

Your hidden assets

leave a comment

A few bits and pieces I have lying around the house…

Books - don’t read them every day (and hard to read more than one at a time.)

DVDs - I’ve already watched the.

Clothes & shoes - can’t wear them all at once.

Backpacks - I have 2. I might use one in a day, but almost never need to use both at once.

Musical instruments and gear - that guitar has been sitting in the corner for quite a while now. But I’m still very attached to it and don’t want to sell it.

Bubble machine - bought it for a party but I don’t have parties very often.

Hard drive space - I while back my external hard drive was having some problems and needed to be reformatted. The problem was I didn’t have anywhere to put all my files so I had to go out and buy another one just so I could copy over the files and fix it. Crazy right?! I hope I can help someone else avoid this conundrum by listing my own hard drive space on rentoid.

Dumbells - These are something that many people have, but think about it, if you’re like me, most people don’t use them every day and the days I do use them it will only be for 15 minutes or so.

Suit - what do I need this for? Weddings and funerals. Do these come around often? Nope.

TVs - Sure, it might turn out that nobody wants to rent your old TV but you never know, and it certainly doesn’t hurt trying.

I’ll be listing these on rentoid in the next few days. What items do you have lying around the house that could be out there making you easy money?

Exploding Rental Myths #1- “You only rent when you can’t afford to buy it”

leave a comment

Part of the fun here at rentoidHQ is smashing lots of common myths and misconceptions about hire and rental.  So we thought we’d do a short series of blog posts on some of the key myths that rentoid has helped squash.

Starting with the myth that you only rent stuff you can’t afford.

The economic logic just doesn’t add up on this one.

Let me give you an example.  Do you own a camcorder?  It probably cost you about $500, and you may have saved for it, put it on the plastic, whatever, but you were able to afford it.

So then, how many times have you used it?  A recent twitpoll on twitter suggests most people have used theirs an average of four times.  Thats $125.00 a time!

Would you have purchased it if the sales guy said to you “Each time you use this HD-XP-3300 SL-CD Cam Corder it will cost you $125.00″?

Didn’t think so.

To rub salt into your wound, that camera at the back of your cupboard is probably out of date now too.

But you can rent new HD Cam Corders for about $120.00 a day.   That’s cheaper than buying a new one, and it features the lastest technology.

Rent it four times, and that’s $480.00, cheaper than spending $500+ on a new one.

And it doesn’t matter if its a lawnmower, ladder, Playstation, or car roof carrier, the economics of buying some of these items that you can afford, but rarely use always looses out to renting!

Myth Busted!

And if you have an example to share about how you have used rentoid to rent something that you could afford, but only needed on a temporary basis, we’d love to hear about it!

Rentoid improved usability & awesomeness

leave a comment

We’ve just updated our site on rentoid which is super awesome.

But there is only 1 new feature. Yep, just one. Which is a rating system. So after each rental you’ll be able to document your experience with your other rentoid member. Both the renter and the rentee get to rate each other and make some comments. It’s so simple to use I don’t need to explain it here.

Rating System

There is nothing else which is new. Instead we’ve just made everything we already had easier to use.

Check it out and let us know your thoughts.

Renaults new electric cars

leave a comment

Renault has wowed the crowd at the Fankfurt International Motor Show with 4 new uber futurist electric cars. All of which they claim to be in production by 2012. We can only hope to see them on rentoid.com. If they become available here in Australia I’ll be the first person to buy one… and of course I’ll list it on rentoid for rent. Maybe our friends a flexicar will embrace them too….

The sooner the world works out we don’t need to own cars, but share them, the better off we’ll all be.  Have you thought about renting your spare car on rentoid? It’s a $10,000 plus idle asset 90% of its life. ….

There’s some nice pics below and you can read the full story here.

Here’s a real story about two rentoid members and their experience - visually depicted. It’s how we do our advertising here at rentoid - pen, paper, the truth and a little imagination.  Enjoy!
