Exploding Rental Myths #2: “People wreck stuff if it is rented”

leave a comment

We are continuing our Exploding Rental Myths series today, with a quick hammering of the idea that people “wreck” (destroy, kill or deliberately misuse!) rented goods.

Ever heard the comment “drive it like it’s rented”?

We have….. but we have rarely (almost never) seen any proof of it in action.

The team at rentoid have over fifteen years experience working with some of Australia’s leading rental companies as well as here at rentoid, and we can count on one hand the number of times people have significantly damaged (deliberately or by accident) rented items. That’s a fact.

People who rent your items respect the trust you have shown in them.  That’s another fact.

Embracing trust is at the core of the renting concept.  You trust others with your belongings, or you are trusted with other peoples belongings.  Very few people set out to destroy this relationship, they will do the right thing by you, and expect you to do the right thing by them (including giving them a working item at a fair price).

That’s the way the rentoid community roll.  And that is what we all expect from each other around here.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t put  a security bond on your items to protect yourself, and you should always make sure renters know how to use, operate and care for your goods to prevent accidental damage.  Not showing someone who to use your stuff increases the risk of accidental damage.

But the idea that people will set out to misuse and damage your stuff is simply not supported by the facts.

It’s just another rental myth….. busted!

Exploding Rental Myths #1- “You only rent when you can’t afford to buy it”

leave a comment

Part of the fun here at rentoidHQ is smashing lots of common myths and misconceptions about hire and rental.  So we thought we’d do a short series of blog posts on some of the key myths that rentoid has helped squash.

Starting with the myth that you only rent stuff you can’t afford.

The economic logic just doesn’t add up on this one.

Let me give you an example.  Do you own a camcorder?  It probably cost you about $500, and you may have saved for it, put it on the plastic, whatever, but you were able to afford it.

So then, how many times have you used it?  A recent twitpoll on twitter suggests most people have used theirs an average of four times.  Thats $125.00 a time!

Would you have purchased it if the sales guy said to you “Each time you use this HD-XP-3300 SL-CD Cam Corder it will cost you $125.00″?

Didn’t think so.

To rub salt into your wound, that camera at the back of your cupboard is probably out of date now too.

But you can rent new HD Cam Corders for about $120.00 a day.   That’s cheaper than buying a new one, and it features the lastest technology.

Rent it four times, and that’s $480.00, cheaper than spending $500+ on a new one.

And it doesn’t matter if its a lawnmower, ladder, Playstation, or car roof carrier, the economics of buying some of these items that you can afford, but rarely use always looses out to renting!

Myth Busted!

And if you have an example to share about how you have used rentoid to rent something that you could afford, but only needed on a temporary basis, we’d love to hear about it!
