The place to rent anything - blog

Just awesome!

one comment

So I’m trying to think of a rational reason to put this Youtube clip on the rentoid blog. Like; - we’ve got a few airplanes to rent, or when traveling, hire stuff using rentoid before you go and save cash, or something….. but in the end it’s really here because two of the rentoid crew me (Steve) and Ross are airplane addicts and we just like watching them …. Ok it’s a tenuous link at best, but at least we found one. Enjoy!

Coming soon!

leave a comment

Is a new rentoid.com front page. Which will be a fairly dramatic change to the rentoid front page. So if you think you’re in the wrong spot when we change the home page next week…. Just stop, think and look - You’re in the right place. Don’t worry it will still be super simple to navigate - they’ll just be more cool things to play on.

revolution

It will be more of a ‘Revolution’ than ‘Evolution’ - but we’re doing it because we’ve got so much cool stuff buried inside rentoid.com - we just want it all to bubble to the top of the site. So that’s what we are doing. A warning though, it may become quite addictive for web surfers when you discover how much cool stuff we actually have !

Q & A from rentoid member

leave a comment

Question:

Hi steve,

Someone recently went to rent something off me, rentoid charged me, then the guy changed his mind and didn’t want to rent.

How do I get a refund?

Cheers (rentoid member)

Answer:

Hi (rentoid member),

We check and monitor the transactions and comments - you’ll notice we have not charged your card for this. If we do charge you for a transaction that doesn’t go through, it’s as simple as letting us know and we’ll refund you every time no questions asked. We only ever want to be paid if we make you money.

Unfortunately a few people opt out from a rental and change their mind - that’s life! We are thinking of changing the system so the renter pays us first - 5% which they can deduct from the rental price on pick up - which will ensure the owners of items don’t get hassled with ‘no shows’ - What are your thoughts on that idea?

Let us know (rentoid member),

Cheers Steve & team.

Response:

yeah that sound like it might work

Top 5 New Years Resolutions

leave a comment

These are the top 5 resolutions from around the world that people say they will do. Rentoid gets you one step closer to actually making it happen in 2009!

#1 Lose weight
Sorry to be so hard hitting - but it is actually the global number 1 resolution ad who are we to ‘moderate’ reality? So here’s how we can help you get this one under way. Rent a treadmill. Rent a Home Gym. Heck, we can even stretch the definition to a Nintendo Wii.

treadmill

#2 Get finances in order
Well - here’s the easiest way to get this one going : rent out your idel assets. Go through your garage, spare room, desk drawers, wardrobes and cupboards and put it on rentoid for rent. Next, think renting instead of buying. Especially for stuff you only need for a day or a week. It’s better for your finances to spend 5% on renting than 100% on buying. We have a heap of business and finances books for rent. The type you wont find in a standard library which rent for as little as $1 a month. Or just get this piggy as a reminder!

piggy

#3 Go green
Get the garden in order - we’ve got tools a plenty for rent. Enough said. What about this rent Toyota Prius Hybrid car- drive without guilt! Bonus - every rental transaction is a win for the environment. Every time you rent something it’s a product which doesn’t get made, packaged, shipped and sold. Sure, we’re not scientists, but we’re quite certain this is a win for the environment. And Hummers aren’t allowed

garden

#4 learn to play and instrument
Aways wanted to learn to play a musical Instrument? Well now’s you chance. With Youtube having free lessons ‘galore’ for guitar, bass, piano, drums…. All you need now is an instrument… and we’ve got plenty for rent right here.

drumkit

#5 Learn a language
For one of the most multicultural countries, Australia has a pretty low rate of people who speak second languages. well at rentoid we’d love to help - So here’s some language books and CD’s to help you learn. And don’t forget to list your language CD’s for others to rent. As well as a private jet to get you to the country once you have the language nailed! It’s a nice dream!

Good Luck & Cheers Ross, Luke & Steve.

Never get a rental? Price matters!

leave a comment

Well unless you’re trying to rent something out which is quite unusual the answer is pretty simple: Your pricing is wrong.

When you get the prices right - stuff rents - like in a day or two. So here’s the rentoid guide to smart rental pricing that will get you transactions, make you happy and the person renting your item happy.

Price per day = 1% of items value

Price per weekend = 3% of items value

Price per week = 5% of items value

Price per month = 10% of items value

When we use the term value, we don’t mean what ‘you’ paid for it, more what it costs to buy today, or what it is worth.

Our classic example is the Nintendo Wii - which is our most popular rental item. They cost around $400 to buy. If you price yours at $20 for a week - you’ll rent it out in a flash. Just try it and you’ll see.

These recommended rates are a really good return on investment as most houses only get around 5% of their value to rent them for an entire year… you do the math!

Cheers, rentoid team!

'Whatever it is - just do it'

leave a comment

No - not an American shoe brand slogan, but a great song by Australian artist Ben Lee which make a great new year resolution.

We thought we’d pot the lyrics here on the rentoid blog, as it’s the favourite song of the rentoid founders. We think the words are worth sharing - especially at the start of a new year! You can check out Ben in the itunes store or the song on youtube. Good luck in 2009!

Are you changing, are you changing, are you changing.
Do you know it, do you feel it, do you know it.
But you’re waiting, why’re you waiting, why’re you waiting.
Just do it, whatever it is.
there are secrets, there are secrets, there are secrets.
there are places, there are places, you can go to
they might tell you, yeah they’ll tell you, that you shouldn’t

just do it, whatever it is, whatever it is,
just do it, whatever it is, whatever it is,
go do it, whatever it is, whatever it is,
just do it, whatever it is.

and you’re dancing, and you’re looking kinda crazy
and your arms, are making little circles
there are reasons, there are reasons, you can find out

so do it, whatever it is, whatever it is,
just do it, whatever it is, whatever it is,
go do it, whatever it is, whatever it is,
whatever it is, whatever it is.

it’s so quiet, it’s so quiet, it’s so quiet
and you’re dreaming, and you’re dreaming, and you’re dreaming
I turn to you and say - awake is the new sleep, awake is the new sleep
so wake up. And do it, whatever it is. Just do it, whatever it is.
’cause awake is the new sleep, awake is the new sleep
so wake up
wake up.
and do it. Whatever it is, whatever it is,
just do it, whatever it is, whatever it is,
go do it, whatever it is, whatever it is
just do it, whatever it is, whatever it is.

Not a very creative blog post title. But it sure is a descriptive one.

We have added larger photos so that you can have a much closer look at the item you are about to rent simple by clicking on the smaller image on the details page. As you can see below.

New maps on rentoid

At first we were a little against showing a map of where our rentoid members are…. mainly because of security concerns. It didn’t feel right to show an exact location of people and their valuables!

Problems is, we just don’t know where every suburb is, and who knew there was a Carlton in Sydney? Not me!

maps-1

maps-2

So here’s a our answer - we’ve added maps ‘Just to the suburb level’ - powered by our good friends at Google! Which means everyone’s security is protected but we can get a good visual of where the rentoid members are. You can also pull and drag the  maps out and in to get a better view of surrounding areas and suburbs.

Enjoy - the rentoid team.

Water prices up in Australia!

one comment

It’s no secret we have a penchant for all things environmental here at rentoid.com

But I gotta say we I find it slightly ironic when we are encouraged to reduce our use of water, to be careful with our precious resource. Then we achieve this and we are rewarded with a price increase for our good behaviour. What the? I don’t have an issue with the prices rises, just the context and reason for raising them - profit. I’d rather it be to further reduce consumption. You can read more about it here.

water

This is just nonsensical beauracracy and sending the wrong message. Boo hiss from the team at rentoid.
